Back taxes owed on proposed SuperTarget site

Published: March 9, 2010 8:01:46 AM CST

There is more than $1.4 million in delinquent property taxes, assessments and penalties on land proposed for a SuperTarget and related development.

Woodbury Developers LLC owes just over $1 million in taxes and assessments on the development site, according to Washington County property records. With penalties, fees and interest, the total is about $1.44 million.

That will be cleared up when a land sale is finalized with Target Corp., said Paul Maenner of Woodbury Developers.

“It will be paid off one way or the other,” Maenner said.

The unpaid charges date from 2006. The owners owe $101,523 in property taxes. Assessments total $933,203, mostly for a number of area traffic improvements.

The property is west of Woodbury Drive, north of Tamarack Road and south of Commerce Drive.

In 2009, 99 percent of Woodbury's property taxes were paid on time, City Administrator Clint Gridley said.

City staff have recommended approval of the development plan, which includes selling part of the property to Target Corp. The Commerce Hill developers also envision smaller retail outlets and office space on the site.

Gridley said that before the city approves the plat for SuperTarget, the back taxes must be paid.

The Commerce Hill deveopment plan goes before the Woodbury City Council Wednesday night. It already has been approved by the Woodbury Planning Commission.
